چکیده

To study the interaction of star-formation and turbulent molecular cloud structuring, we analyse numerical models and observations of self-gravitating clouds using the ∆-variance as statistical measure for structural characteristics. In the models we resolve the transition from purely hydrodynamic turbulence to gravitational collapse associated with the formation and mass growth of protostellar cores. We compare models of driven and freely decaying turbulence with and without magnetic fields. Self-gravitating supersonic turbulence always produces a density structure that contains most power on the smallest scales provided by collapsed cores as soon as local collapse sets in. This is in contrast to non-self-gravitating hydrodynamic turbulence where the ∆-variance is dominated by large scale structures. To detect this effect in star-forming regions observations have to resolve the high density contrast of protostellar cores with respect to their ambient molecular cloud. Using the 3mm continuum map of a star-forming cluster in Serpens we show that the dust emission traces the full density evolution. On the contrary, the density range accessible by molecular line observations is insufficient for this analysis. Only dust emission and dust extinction observations are able to to determine the structural parameters of star-forming clouds following the density evolution during the gravitational collapse.

Structural Analysis of Molecular Clouds: Dendrograms

We demonstrate the utility of dendrograms at representing the essential features of the hierarchical structure of the isosurfaces for molecular line data cubes. The dendrogram of a data cube is an abstraction of the changing topology of the isosurfaces as a function of contour level. The ability to track hierarchical structure over a range of scales makes this analysis philosophically different...

Local stability criterion for self-gravitating disks in modified gravity

We study local stability of self-gravitating fluid and stellar disk in the context of modified gravity theories which predict a Yukawa-like term in the gravitational potential of a point mass. We investigate the effect of such a Yukawa-like term on the dynamics of self-gravitating disks. More specifically, we investigate the consequences of the presence of this term for the local stability of t...

Magnetorotationally-Driven Galactic Turbulence and the Formation of Giant Molecular Clouds

Giant molecular clouds (GMCs), where most stars form, may originate from self-gravitating instabilities in the interstellar medium. Using local threedimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we investigate ways in which galactic turbulence associated with the magnetorotational instability (MRI) may influence the formation and properties of these massive, self-gravitating clouds. Our disk mod...

The Structure of Self-gravitating Polytropic Systems with N around 5

We investigate the structure of self-gravitating polytropic stellar systems. We present a method which allows to obtain approximate analytical solutions, ψn+ǫ(x), of the nonlinear Poisson equation with the polytropic index n+ ǫ, given the solution ψn(x) with the polytropic index n, for any positive or negative ǫ such that |ǫ| ≪ 1. Application of this method to the spherically symmetric stellar ...

Embedded, Self-gravitating Equilibria in Sheetlike and Filamentary Molecular Clouds

Numerical solutions of the isothermal Lane-Emden equation are presented, corresponding to self-gravitating gaseous cores embedded within a finite density envelope of overall cylindrical symmetry. These structures may be members of a fragmentation hierarchy proceeding from sheets, to filaments, to elongated, prolate clumps. The embedded solutions are the first of their kind, and as such represen...
